Welcome to day 2 of our trip. Today we left Chicago and the "J&P" Clinton Street Bed and Breakfast (actually it was a Dinner Bed and Breakfast) and traveled to Canada.
After going through the checkpoint into Canada and almost losing our camera because Lynn took a picture of the checkpoint booth, we traveled the five hours to Amherstburg. On the way to McKinnon's B&B we were looking for a place to have some lunch and, as luck would have it, found our first winery, DiAngelo's. We stopped to sample and bought a couple bottles, but were still hungry. When we got to our B&B,
our kind innkeeper directed us to a great little fish place, where we ate our fill of smelts, perch, and pickerel. We also had a few LaBlatt's.
Then we headed toward the Wyandotte Cemetery, resting place of Chief Joe White and other ancestors. As most of you know, he was Lynn and Jim's great, great, great, grandfather. The Wyandotte Indian Cemetery is on the banks of Lake Erie in Amherstburg. Jim, Paula, Larry, and Lynn were able to photograph tombstones as well as make rubbings of Chief Joe White's monument.
The cemetery, although obviously mowed, was small and graves seemed somewhat scattered. Many headstones were impossible to read because of weathering. Those we could read told some sad stories; an eleven-month-old, fourteen-year-old, nineteen-year-old were typical. Along with Chief Joe White's grave, we also saw two of the Splitlogs. It made us wonder what their lives had been like, where had they lived, and what did they enjoy. It's hard to imagine! We hope to get some of these questions answered tomorrow when we speak with an historian.
We finished our wine on our deck, while listening to the waves from Lake Erie before retiring for the evening. What a wonderful way to fall asleep!
